The Economist explains: how dictionary-makers decide which words to include

EARLIER this month the Oxford Dictionaries added a number of new words to its online collection. (This is not to be confused with the flagship Oxford English Dictionary.) As usual, Oxford included buzzy internet- and youth-inflected coinages such as "neckbeard", "side boob" and "mansplaining". And as usual, internet commenters seemed nonplussed by what seemed to be a venerable institution (ie, Oxford) validating teenage slang. How do lexicographers decide what goes into the dictionary?

New figures show that far from being an endangered language, Basque is now a story of success in the Basque Country. Knowledge of the Basque language and its use has steadily been on the increase according to one of the main findings of the Basque Sociolinguistic Map, launched on April 7 by the Basque Minister for Education, Language Policy and Culture, Cristina Uriarte, and the Deputy Minister for Language Policy, Patxi Baztarrika.

MILAS – The Europe-Wide Online Language Competition on Facebook

On the 1st April, FUEN's European language campaign “language diversity” started the first Europe-wide online-language competition for youth and young adults, that will focus on linguistic diversity and multilingualism. The emphasis is put particularly on the regional and minority languages of Europe, which should become more attractive and improve their image.

E.U. Fights to Get Everyone Speaking Same Language on Education

In 2002, government leaders of the member states called for “at least two foreign languages to be taught from a very early age,” and in 2005, the Union’s executive body, the European Commission, declared a long-term objective “to increase individual multilingualism until every citizen has practical skills in at least two languages in addition to his or her mother tongue.”
