ELA2012 - 3rd conference on early language acquisition

The third ELA conference will be held on Dec. 5-7, 2012, in Lyon, France. The main theme of the conference is early language acquisition with a focus on the role of input, in both normal and atypical development. The conference will consist of plenary lectures, paper sessions and poster sessions. The languages of the conference will be French and English. Selected conference papers, after a blind-review procedure, will be published in a journal or in an edited book.

9th edition of minority language song contest Liet International

On Saturday 1 December 2012 the Asturian city of Xixón (Gijón) will host the 9th edition of European minority language song contest Liet International, the one and only song contest for singers and bands who sing in a European minority language. In Asturias the song contest is hosted by the autonomous Asturian government in close collaboration with Foundation Liet International from Friesland in the Netherlands. After eight previous editions in Friesland, the Netherlands, Swedish Lapland (Sápmi), Breizh/Brittany (France) and Udine in Italy it is the first time that Liet International comes to the Iberian peninsula.

International Symposium: Multilingualism in Higher Education - (Cross-) Disciplinary perspectives on knowledge development in bi- and trilingual programmes

At European level the Bologna process foresees a borderless and democratic European Higher Education Area. In terms of languages of instruction, universities are either maintaining their local language or introducing English, whereas the University of Luxembourg in its mission statement emphasizes the significance of multilingualism and mobility as characteristics of the European university of the future.

2012 CEL/ELC Forum: Rethinking Multilingualism: Challenges and Opportunities

The 2012 CEL/ELC Forum’s title is “Rethinking Multilingualism: Challenges and Opportunities.” Within this frame, the various sessions will examine multilingualism’s relation to a variety of themes (enumerated below) in order to conceptualize the possibilities and constraints that lie ahead for a Multilingual Europe. Projects and papers developed by the CEL/ELC’s various Special Interest Groups will be presented, and key speakers will cover some of the fundamental issues that we face, both as an organization and as stakeholders, to promote and sustain the richness of Europe’s languages in a pragmatic and contemporaneous way.

Congrès International : Les locuteurs et les langues : pouvoirs, non-pouvoirs et contre-pouvoirs

L’objectif de ce congrès est d’explorer la manière dont, dans des espaces sociaux diversifiés (institutions politiques, école, milieux de travail, milieux associatifs etc.), le langage (en tant que pratiques, discours et idéologie) constitue un instrument de pouvoir, de non-pouvoir et de contre-pouvoir. Ce congrès cherchera avant tout à comprendre les processus sociaux complexes qui font du langage un terrain de lutte, de consensus ou encore de construction de la différence. En effet, la diversité des langues et leur variabilité intrinsèque s’inscrivent dans de véritables processus liés à la distribution du pouvoir, qu’il soit économique, social, politique ou symbolique. À ce titre, langues et langage contribuent à structurer nos sociétés, et les individus qui la composent, dévoilant alors des tensions et des rapports de pouvoir.

Expert Seminar on Social Media and Lesser Used Languages

Since 2007, the Mercator Research Centre and the Basque Government have an agreement to organise a European Expert Seminar every year.  The central focus of the fifth seminar, which will be held in November 2012, will be: "Social media and its impact for lesser used languages".

Another part of the agreement is a research project on multilingualism and multilingual education, a comparative study of the Basque Autonomous Community and the province of Fryslân. This multi-annual research project is carried out by the Mercator Research Centre in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country.
