International Translation Day 2012: Translation as Intercultural Communication

Facilitated by the major changes and shifts in the global economy, culture and information technology in the last three decades, we now have a radically altered linguistic, socio-political and cultural context for intercultural communication. If "to be or not to be ... global" is hardly a question for people and nations in the contemporary era, then "to live or not to live … in translation" is no longer an option but a reality of our everyday life.

As brokers of peace and mutual understanding, FIT members will, in various ways and through different channels, celebrate International Translation Day (ITD) 2012 with the theme of "Translation as Intercultural Communication".

We in FIT are committed to supporting the translators, interpreters, and terminologists around the world working to bring greater intercultural understanding through their professional efforts.

Developing a multilingual competence of citizens is a lifelong learning task, integrating the efforts of the educational system, the scientific community, the experts in language learning and its teaching, the certifying institutions, as well as the personal motivation and effort of each individual. European Day of Languages (EDL)

The European Day of Languages (EDL) was first celebrated in 2001 during the European Year of Languages. At the end of this campaign the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers decided to make EDL an annual event, to be celebrated each 26 September. Every year, millions of people in the Council's member states and elsewhere organise or take part in activities to promote linguistic diversity and the ability to speak other languages.

The general aim is to draw attention to Europe's rich linguistic and cultural diversity, which has to be encouraged and maintained, but also to extend the range of languages that people learn throughout their lives in order to develop their plurilingual skills and reinforce intercultural understanding. EDL is an opportunity to celebrate all of Europe's languages, including those that are less widely spoken and the languages of migrants.
