III International Symposium on Multilingualism in Cyberspace (SIMC)

Maaya, the world network for linguistic diversity, has organise the III SIMC, a meeting which brings together some thirty international experts with the intention of shining a spotlight on practical initiatives in the area of the appropriation of cyberspace as a means of revitalisation for languages.

Objectives To publicise best practices and failures relevant to the presence which has been established by the languages of the world in cyberspace, and especially in Web 2.0. To alert the general public to the importance of linguistic diversity in the digital world with an emphasis on the emerging issues in connection with the job market.

ALTE 42nd Meeting and Conference

ALTE will hold its 42nd bi-annual Meeting and Conference at the headquarters of the Goethe Institut in Munich on 21-23 November 2012.

As with previous events, the first two days of meetings will be for representatives of ALTE members and institutional affiliates only, and the final day, Friday 23 November, will be an open conference day for all those with an interest in language testing. The theme of the conference day will be ‘Developing and Adapting Test materials for Younger Learners’ and speakers will include Shelagh Rixon of the University of Warwick, Henny Rönneper from the Ministry of Education and School, Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Neil Jones of the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. A number of representatives of the SurveyLang project will also give their perspectives on aspects of the project.

International Dissemination Conference

The Conference is part of the implementation of the project: "Creativity in Language Learning", a project organised with the financial support of the European Community Accompanying Measures Program and aimed at highlighting the effectiveness of the creative methodologies in language learning and teaching and at selecting the relevant best practices in this field. More details can be found on . The project aims to give an opportunity to the chosen educational projects to be disseminated in an international context. It is important to underline that the participants, coming from different countries, will demonstrate how creative approaches can work effectively in different languages and thus how creativity is absolutely pivotal and consistent with the aims of multilingualism.

Workshop: “New perspectives on crosslinguistic influence in language learning”

This workshop is intended to bring together specialists working on crosslinguistic influence in language learning in order to discuss new perspectives and current issues in this area of research, such as the following (cf. Jarvis & Pavlenko 2008:5):

    - studies dealing with the causes, constraints, the selectivity, and directionality of crosslinguistic influence
    - investigations on the scope and on different types of crosslinguistic influence (transfer of linguistic structures, socio-culturally shaped patterns of language usage, learning strategies, and others)
    - investigations on the implications of the insights into crosslinguistic influence for the teaching and learning of L1, L2, L3 etc. and for multiple language learning in general
    - studies dealing with the connection between crosslinguistic influence and linguistic awareness, especially with reference to third language acquisition
    - theoretical models that account for different causes, occurrences and manifestations of crosslinguistic influence; theories that explain the influence of cognitive, linguistic and extralinguistic factors in crosslinguistic influence
    - studies focusing on the development and the testing of hypotheses concerning crosslinguistic influence on the basis of theoretical models

Queen's University Belfast is pleased to announce its Interdisciplinary Linguistics Conference 2012 (ILinC 2012), a student-led venture co-organised by the Schools of Education, English, and Modern Languages. Colloque international: La traduction dans des contextes de plurilinguisme officiel

Ce colloque souhaite fournir l’occasion d’échanger sur la spécificité de la traduction et de l’interprétation dans des contextes de multilinguisme officiel ou institutionnel et les « effets de traduction » (Simon 1996) qui s’y font ressentir. Bon nombre de pays du monde sont officiellement multilingues : l’Afghanistan (le pachtou, le dari), la Belgique (le néerlandais, le français, l’allemand), le Cameroun et le Canada (l’anglais, le français), la Finlande (le finnois, le suédois), l’Inde (23 langues officielles), l’Irlande (l’irlandais, l’anglais), Israël (l’hébreu, l’arabe), la Norvège (les deux variétés du norvégien), le Pakistan (l’ourdou, l’anglais), les Philippines (l’anglais, le filipino-tagalog), l’Afrique du Sud (11 langues officielles) et la Suisse (le français, l’allemand, l’italien), entre autres pays, de même que bon nombre d’organisations internationales (p. e. l’Organisation des Nations Unies, la Commission européenne, Amnesty International). Les interventions traiteront au moins un aspect de l’interaction entre la traduction et le multilinguisme officiel, par exemple l’institutionnalisation de la traduction dans les pays et les organisations identifiés ci-dessus de même que dans d’autres pays et organisations, voire dans les villes bilingues.
