Language Endangerment: Language Policy and Planning

This conference will consider how and whether the interface between people, politics and language can affect the fortunes of the endangered linguistic varieties involved. Can policy really alter linguistic behaviour, or does it merely ratify changes already underway within the speech community? Do governments have a moral obligation to support endangered languages? Should linguists play a role in shaping language policy and, if so, what should that role be? When policy decisions are at odds with the will of the speech community, which will triumph?

Summer School in Cognitive Linguistics, 22-26 July 2013

The Summer School in Cognitive Linguistics is a one-week international programme held at Bangor University. The Summer School will consist of 16 courses on topics in cognitive linguistics and will be taught by leading researchers in the field.

Our teaching faculty will be drawn from across the cognitive sciences and include local instructors as well as distinguished researchers from outside Bangor. It will also feature three keynote speeches and a poster symposium, during which participants can present their work and obtain feedback.

International Congress of Linguists: "The Language-Cognition Interface"

The International Congresses of Linguists (ICL) occurs every five years, under the governance of the International Permanent Committee of Linguists (CIPL). The last congress took place in Seoul, year 2008. The Société Suisse de Linguistique (SSL) candidated for the organization of the 19th congress, in 2013, in Ferdinand de Saussure’s city, one century after his death. Geneva was chosen for the venue, and the congress will take place there, from July 21 to July 27.

Indigenous and Migrant Minority Languages in Changing Multilingual Environments

Minority languages, by their very nature, exist in multilingual environments. But far-reaching developments in globalisation and migration mean these multilingual environments are currently undergoing dramatic changes. Across Europe and around the world, traditional forms of multilingualism are giving way to new and more complex forms, in which speakers of indigenous minority languages must negotiate their place alongside newer migrant minority languages, in addition to other more established majority languages.
