Giving regional and minority languages a say!

Giving regional and minority languages a say!

The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is a unique treaty between states that have signed up to a language-friendly future. Language decline can be stopped and even reversed, as examples from many countries have shown, where the younger generation are learning to use the languages traditionally spoken in their families and regions. In this way, entire cultures have been saved and are prospering once again.

Language Rich Europe - Review and Recommendations

This paper is based on the conclusions of the national and regional profiles set out in Language Rich Europe: Trends in Policies and Practices for Multilingualism in Europe, together with reports of the national and regional launches and workshops carried out in order to consider the core document and make proposals for national action. It also takes into account the discussions at the Language Rich Europe (LRE) London Conference that took place at the British Academy in December 2012.

Why Bilingual Education Policy Is Needed: A Philosophical Response to the Critics

Why Bilingual Education Policy Is Needed: A Philosophical Response to the Critics

What role does bilingual education policy have in the educational opportunity structure for heritage language (HL) students? In what ways might bilingual education enhance students' self-determination? In this article, I shall argue that the various criticisms against bilingual education policy are myopic and focused on nostalgic notions of Americanization and assimilation, which often cost heritage language students a secure sense of cultural identity, an expansive social context of choice, and consequently, their self-determination. When students have a secure sense of authenticity in their cultural identity, and a favorable social context within which to make important life choices, they then have the best chance of become self-determining. Thus, I examine how bilingual education policy should be justified based on the principle of self-determination.

Language Rich Europe - Conclusions and Future Perspectives

This closing report was commissioned by the British Council to provide an overview of the European and local recommendations that came out of LRE and in the likelihood that new opportunities can be found for the further development of what has already been achieved. Authored by Lid King, Director, the Languages Company and the project’s Exploitation Partner, the report provides a fresh look at the multitude of outputs generated by LRE. In a concise way, we are guided to a clear understandingof the project’s recommendations for Europe and the responses of European agencies. It also shows the interrelation between local recommendations, both national and regional, the result of fruitful, close collaboration of over 30 project partners over three years.
